Defective PIP breast implants

Thousands of women around the world have received sub-standard silicone breast implants manufactured by the French company Poly Implant Prothèse (PIP). Some private hospitals and clinics which fitted them are declining to remove them without payment and some governments are declining to assist, unless removal is deemed 'medically necessary'

This leaves many women uncertain as to what to do, whilst others are determined to have the defective implants removed before they leak or cause other problems.

In most cases removal without replacement is a simple procedure, not requiring an overnight stay in hospital. Every woman is different, so replacement requires careful selection of the new implants to be used, for shape, size and quality and skilled surgery to place them correctly.

In discussions with MHL, Vienna International Medical Clinic (see below) has offered to remove any woman's PIP breast implants free of charge. Where new implants are desired, these will be charged in the normal way.

Reconstructive surgery may be used following accidents, to correct congenital deformities or following operations such as removal of tumours.

Aesthetic treatments may also be given to improve appearance, where there is no medical need or problem. One popular area for such treatments is breast augmentation, but recently problems have arisen due to one manufacturer providing sub-standard implants.
